两名美国知情的官员透露，尽管拜登政府没有对欧洲盟友施压，但如果这些盟国派出部长级高级代表团出席北京冬奥会，“美国将感到失望”。
随后，澳大利亚政府看懂了美国的“暗示”，第一时间跟风作秀。新西兰政府则表示不会向北京冬奥会派出部长级外交代表，理由“主要与新冠疫情有关”。如今，留给美国“亲密盟友”英国的时间不多了。
《每日电讯报》8日援引消息称，在跟与不跟之间，约翰逊政府正在考虑一个折中方案——对北京冬奥会进行“有限外交抵制”。届时，英国将不会派遣部长级外交代表，但会让英国驻华大使吴若兰（Caroline Wilson DCMG）出席北京冬奥会。
但报道补充称，在权衡各种情况后，约翰逊政府完全“外交抵制”的可能性依然存在。
值得一提的是，英国议会中的“对华鹰派”正在鼓吹对北京冬奥会进行彻底的“外交抵制”。英国前外交大臣、现任副首相兼司法大臣拉布本周宣称，他“绝不会”出席北京冬奥会。
