声明开头，吕蒂希痛心疾首地回忆“1·6美国国会暴乱”的危害，称那一天刺穿了美国民主的心脏，美国民主摇摇欲坠，是美国建国200多年来第一次没有进行和平的权力交接。
他表示，由于特朗普继续拒绝承认上届大选结果的公正性，以及他对美国民主的“蔑视”，直到今天，数百万美国人仍然认为2020年选举存在舞弊，民主党的胜利是从特朗普那里“偷走的”。
吕蒂希痛斥特朗普和现在的共和党共同发动了“对民主政体的战争”，贻害几代人，“不幸的是，许多美国人，尤其是年轻的美国人，甚至开始质疑宪政民主是否是美国自治的最佳形式。”

杰夫·邓肯认为，哈里斯参选是阻止特朗普再次开启污迹斑斑的总统任期的最佳途径。
当地时间8月19日，美国民主党全国代表大会在伊利诺伊州芝加哥市开幕。对于民主党这次大会，特朗普日前在一场竞选活动上称其为“一次被操控的大会”，因为拜登不在候选人名单上。
