Large rocks were also thrown towards the Indian positions by Chinese troops stationed on the high ridge above Point 14, one source said. Though some fought back using the improvised weapons carried by the PLA, most had no means of defence.

16日，印度国防部紧急召开会议，总理莫迪当天听取了简报。第二天，国防部长辛格首次就加勒万河谷阵亡士兵公开发声。他称，对阵亡士兵“深感不安和痛苦”，印度不会忘记他们的“勇敢和牺牲”。但，辛格没有提及中国。

综合印度媒体报道，16日，印度国防部长拉杰纳特·辛格、印度外长贾尚卡尔、印度国防部参谋长比平·拉瓦特和印度三军参谋长举行了高级别闭门会议，随后总理莫迪听取了拉达克东部的总体形势的简报。
印度媒体没有透露会议的最新进展，以及会议具体讨论的内容。
在召开完紧急会议第二天，也就是17日，国防部长辛格就加勒万河谷地区印军士兵死亡事件作出公开回应。随后，辛格在推特称，“加勒万河谷的士兵伤亡令人深感不安和痛苦…国家永远不会忘记他们的勇敢和牺牲。”此外，他对阵亡士兵的家属表达了慰问。
对于辛格的表态，印度媒体“印度周刊”认为，他没有提到中国，这或许表明莫迪政府决定不推动局势升级。
不过，中国西部战区新闻发言人张水利大校在16日晚间发表声明称，印军违背承诺，再次越过实控线非法活动，蓄意发动挑衅攻击，引发双方激烈肢体冲突，造成人员伤亡。
加勒万河谷地区主权历来属我。印边防部队出尔反尔，严重违反两国有关边境问题协定协议，严重违反中印军长级会谈共识，严重损害两军关系和两国人民感情。我们要求印方严格约束一线部队，立即停止一切侵权挑衅行动，与中方相向而行，回到对话会谈解决分歧的正确轨道上来。
