世界卫生组织领导人谭德塞强势回应美国总统特朗普对世卫组织的批评。他说，如果不想见到更多的裹尸袋，就不要把新冠病毒政治化。对此，特朗普总统反驳说，政治化的正是谭德塞，世卫组织与中国的关系对美国和全世界都不公平。
谭德塞星期三(4月8日)回怼特朗普说：“请不要将病毒政治化。如果想被病毒利用，想见到更多的裹尸袋，那就请便。如果不想有更多的裹尸袋，就不要政治化。”他敦促对把疫情政治化的行为予以“隔离”。
在谭德塞发表这番讲话之前，特朗普总统星期二批评世卫组织主要由美国出资却“非常以中国为中心”，在疫情信息方面判断失误，“弄砸了”。他还警告要考虑切断世卫组织的资金。
在特朗普总统做出这番表态之际，不断有共和党议员发声批评谭德塞领导的世界卫生组织与中国共产党政府同流。
在星期三的白宫记者会上，特朗普总统针对谭德塞的有关裹尸袋的言论回应说，把问题政治化的正是谭德塞。
特朗普说：“我认为当你说更多裹尸袋问题时，我认为本可以做到的，而他本来可以更好地尽职为人们服务，假如他们给出了正确的分析的话。可是他们以中国为中心，说一切安好，没有人传人，保持边界开放。他想让我保持边界开放。所以我没有听他的，关闭了边界，在当时那是一项艰难的决定。我们都在一起。我们不顾世界卫生组织反对而做出了决定。所以当他说政治化时，他才是政治化。这是不应该的。”
特朗普总统接着说，美国向世卫组织提供了巨额经费，中国提供的资金不成比例。
他说：“我们去年花了4亿5千万美元、4亿5千2百万美元，几乎是5亿美元。前些年都是几亿美元。他们做的必须要比这更好一些。说起政治化，看看他们跟中国的关系，他居然说政治化，我简直不能相信。中国花了4千2百万。我们花了4亿5千万。而一切似乎都是照中国的方式。这是不对的。对我们是不公平的。而且说实话，对世界是不公平的。”
他还在这次记者会上说：“我们要进行一项研究、调查，我们将决定我们要怎么做。”
共和党参议员格雷厄姆星期二对福克斯新闻台说，除非世卫组织改换领导层，否则，作为参议院拨款委员会外交行动小组委员会的主席，他不会在下一个拨款法案中为世卫组织拨款。
世卫组织官员星期三否认该组织以中国为中心，称冠状病毒疫情大流行的严重时刻不是削减经费的时候。
中国外交部发言人赵立坚星期三在北京表示，“中方将一如既往坚定支持世界卫生组织工作。”
