美国有一个30年来无人能解的谜题，就是置于维珍尼亚州兰利（Langley）美国中央情报局（CIA）总部广场的雕像Kryptos。它刻有4段密码，其中3段已破解，第4段迄今仍是未有人能成功破译。制作雕像的艺术家桑伯恩（Jim Sanborn）之前两度「畀贴士」。 1月是他第三次「提水」，也是最后一次么做。
这个名为Kryptos的雕像，是由美国艺术家桑伯恩在80年代制作。他在编撰密码方面毫无经验，在数学方面亦不太擅长，于是向CIA前密码学家协助。两人合作花上4个月，完成这座雕像上「密码」。
名为沙伊特（Edward Scheidt）的专家就是桑伯恩的拍档。他曾是中情局密码学中心的负责人。沙伊特教晓桑伯恩之后，后者便利用不同的技术、模式及矩阵，将变成密码的讯息，置于Kryptos的设计。
这铜制屏风高12呎、宽20呎（高约3.65米、宽约6.09米），上面布满英文字母，是桑伯恩人手制作，在上面拼出近2,000个字母。它在1990年11月3日揭幕。
它的部分密码已由美国家安全局（NSA）及CIA的职员，还有民众破解。

最后一段97个字的密码，至今无人能够破解。桑伯恩曾在2010年第一次给予提示，称密码第64至69个字母（NYPVTT ）代表柏林（Berlin）。 2014年时公开第二个「贴士」：第70至74个字母（MZFPK）代表时钟（Clock）。美国《纽约时报》1月29日所载文章中，是他第三次对外「提水」、也是最后一次这么做：第26至34个字母代表东北方（Northeast）。
桑伯恩守着Kryptos的秘密多年，不少对密码感兴趣的人走到他家门前，查询自己的答案是不是正确，于是他设计一个电邮投稿制度：认为自己已找到答案的人，可将它发过去，并且汇款50美元到指定帐户。桑伯恩会尽量在一周内回覆，告诉寄件者是否已经猜到谜底。
