A wealthy Melbourne man has left almost his entire fortune, nearly $18 million, to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and has also changed the lives of his tenants.
John Perrett received a kidney transplant about three decades ago, which extended his life, but he passed away in September at age 86.
The millionaire left a record donation of $17.5 million to the Royal Melbourne Hospital to show his gratitude.

“His donation will definitely help people with kidney disease to help their lives in years to come. It’s amazing,” Associate Professor Nigel Toussaint said.
But the hospital was not the only place that received a life-changing donation.

Despite having a fortune to his name, Perrett chose to remain living in a three-bedroom St Albans home, which his parents built in 1959.

“He had this old, old television with a green picture and it had this hum in it and for years we would sit there and I’d say, ‘John you would really appreciate the cricket more if you could see it properly’,” Jane said.
